Every year at the end of February hundreds of gameboats from all over Australia converge on Port Stephens for the Annual Interclub Billfish Shootout. Held over two weekends, this can often result in the tagnrelease of well over two thousand Marlin among many other gamefish. The winning boats often tagnrelease up to 18 Marlin a day. Enormous baitschools of slimey mackeral, yellowtail and cowan young take up residence at Port Stephens during the warmer months, ensuring the neverending presence of blue, black and striped marlin.
