Shark Mackerel are one of the mainstays of the reef, and catch plenty trolling along the reef edges. This video shows some quality fish caught on our recent Hardline 2009 trip, with heaps caught. Sharks are always present and took their share, note some decent bitemarks, but that’s fishing. The Rapala X raps are top lures and well worth having one in your troll pattern. Shark mackerel are quite a common bycatch when targetting spanish mackerel on the reef, keeps in fun, and can catch one every hundred metres when on the chew. Shark Mackerel are found througout the Great Barrier reef and grow to 11 or 12 kgs. More generally caught about 5 or 6 kilos though. They fight hard and are good eating fresh. They do have an iodine smell which does put people off, but fresh people were coming back for seconds, so well worth a try on the table. Always have a floating pilchard out when bottom bashing, and any shark mackerel in the area usually won’t say no. Please subscribe for more great fishing tips and news more fishing videos. Cheers Greg
