Trout
Back Country Trout If you are looking for a fly fishing vacation of a lifetime, you will love the Central South Island of New Zealand. Allow Kevin Payne, a registered New Zealand professional fishing guide to take you on a guided experience specializing in sighted flyfishing for wild brown and rainbow trout. You will love the combination of large trout , un-crowded rivers and striking scenery. We realize that finding the right guide on the web can be difficult.
Stalking Trout The Kiwi style of spotting and stalking &wild rainbow &brown trout is what makes your fishing experience here exciting, challenging, and unique. Being guided is the best way to maximize your fishing time while in the South Island. Your guide, Kevin, specializes in spotting fish with a trained eye and puts you in the best position to try and fool these crafty trout with nymphs and dry flies.
The Central South Island of New Zealand This region boasts a mix of spring creeks, freestone rivers and large braided glacial rivers. We are fortunate to be able to access our local and back country rivers by 4WD without the need, or extra expense, of a helicopter, however taking a chopper is an option if preferred. Most days do involve some walking so being mobile is an advantage.
The Fishing
We are gearing up for another season of great fishing. The snow is high in the mountains and it’s looking like the rivers and fish will be in excellent condition come October 1st (and counting!). We just returned from 7 weeks in the States. Kevin travelled Oregon, Idaho, Montana, BC and Alberta. He had a great time and is now having withdrawals from fishing! Not too long now… We always enjoy hearing from past &prospective clients… drop us a line sometime!
The Season has started off well! October’s low land fishing saw fish in good condition after the winter. Fish numbers are looking good too. High country fishing opens on the first Saturday in November. Who can resist going up country to fish for rainbows and browns who haven’t seen an artificial fly for 6 long months. There are still a lot of rivers to check out, but the ones I’ve seen so
Our main trout fly fishing season runs from 1 October-30 April though some fishing is available all year around. At Back Country Trout, we specialize in making an itinerary tailored to suit you and your holiday plans, including catering for non-fishing partners, spouses, and children. Packages or days can start from Christchurch airport or hotel if needed. Back Country Trout works closely with top quality Bed &Breakfasts, lodges and farm stays to ensure a good rest after your fishing
A guided day on the river is NZD$770-$790 for 1 or 2 persons(inclusive of NZ general sales tax of 15%) and includes all equipment and flies, riverside lunch and transport via comfortable 4wd. We have additional guides available to guide larger groups. We are now taking bookings for the 2010-2011 season as well as the 2011-2012 season.
