The Lake Taupo and Turangi region The Lake Taupo and Turangi region has become world renowned for its large numbers of hard fighting fish. – Lake Taupo being the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, comprising 615sqkms and over 600 ft deep. ’I have a passion for fly fishing, especially New Zealand’s bush clad streams. The Boat Summer / Winter (3 hours minimum to full day charters) Brett is a qualified skipper and Maverick is in charter survey. All our boat charters are private charters. Maverick is a 7 meter Haines Hunter with enclosed cabin toilet, powered by a 225 hp Yamaha, complemented by a 8hp harling motor. It gets us to the best fishing spots in comfort, fast! Lake Taupo offers many opportunities from fly fishing, spinning, down rigging, jigging to float planes.
The Fishing
Harling: This is the slow trolling flies to catch fish. The crater edge of the lake is around 6m and this is a great place to harl. Jigging: This is basically dangling the flies in front of the fish. Best during the summer months when the lake has warmed up. Down rigging: Down rigging gets the lures to a precise depth where the fish are. In the summer the thermocline is the target area. During the cooler months the fish move in shallower and a down rigging – harling combo can be very effective
Fly Fishing: Cruise to the stream mouths in the Western Bays or Tongariro Delta, accessible only by boat. Fish can often be seen cruising the shallows, sight fishing to these provides the ultimate challenge. Sinking lines and shooting heads are used on the drop offs. Float plane / fly fishing combo. Take off from Taupo Bay and fly the length of the lake, 42km to the world famous Tongariro River, where we fly fish at the river mouth which is accessible only by boat or float plane.
Fish for 2 hours. then take a short flight to a Lakeside restaurant for lunch. Alternatively fish longer and return directly back to Taupo. A spectacular and relaxing way to fish and sightsee. Sight Seeing: We custom design the trip for you. All fishing trips can include some sightseeing if desired. Maori Carvings, waterfalls, scenic bays, picnics on the shore are all possible, just ask. HALF DAY FLY FISHING: Summer / Winter - Taupo Spawning Tributaries (4 ½ hours approx)
FULL DAY FLY FISHING: Summer / Winter - Taupo Spawning Tributaries (9 hours approx). Drive, walk, wade. A great days fishing, particularly during our winter / spring months during spawning season when fish run up the spawning tributaries. Fishing egg patterns can produce some great fishing and the summer dry fly fishing is superb. Pick up 7.30am – 8am. All quality gear provided (rods, waders, boots, tackle). Refreshments and lunch included. Gourmet picnic hampers optional extra.
