Sportfishing with Captain Jason Alexiou of Sport Fishing Tanzania. Abbas fighting and releasing a nice Dogtooth. Jason, Mady and crew during their personal fishing in Tanzania on their little 26 ft boat. Very good trolling boat, a bit less comfortable for jigging, but they do what they can and they still manage to land some good fish.
Fishing Grounds We are usually based in Dar es Salaam, from where we fish the surrounding waters which include the South Zanzibar Channel and Latham Island. We have also been fishing several times along the coast, from south to north and we are quite familiar with Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Latham Island, Mafia Island, Kilwa, Kenya. Thanks to Jason and Mady extraordinary catches and Dogtooth Tuna records, Latham is reknown in the World for big GT and Dogtooth.
Jason Alexiou Jason Alexiou is an excellent fisherman which had transformed his passion into his living, working for several charter operations along the coast since the age of 16. His involvement did not stop into the charter business, but he is now the IGFA Representative for Tanzania. During his fishing experiences, he has fished extensively, all along the Tanzanian coast, getting to know all the best fishing areas, North to South, Pemba Channel to Kilwa.
Conservation and Tagging Program We fish in accordance with the International Game Fish Association Rules. We tag and release billfish and for the last two years we also started releasing Giant Trevallies, Dogtooth Tuna and most species. Since the last year, Mady has been the Fishing Secretary of the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club and, with the help of her Sub-Committee, she has initiated a new Tagging Program. This program will be for any Fish Species of any size along the coast.
The Fishing
Thanks to Jason’s skills and the profuse knowledge of the area, he made achieve 5 Dogtooth Tuna World Records to the boats he was fishing from (a 100.5 kg Dogtooth Tuna World Record caught on our boats, on 80 lbs line, has just been approved). Two of these Dogtooth Tuna Wolrd Record are held by himself. 1 All tackle World Record Giant Grouper (179.5 kg caught by Nelson Shayne) and 1 Giant Trevally Line Class Lady World Record, were caught on our boats as well .
Mady, is the skipper of the boat and she loves fishing as well whenever she has the occasion to leave the steering. (2 Line Class Dogtooth World Record Lady - 1 Line Class Giant Trevally World Record Lady) Although Jason found these Dogtooth areas more than 15 years ago, being well aware of the vulnerability of these critters and of the large commercial interest they create, he limited himself to fish for Dogtooth Tuna only a few months a year, managing this way to preserve these areas.
LATHAM ISLAND. Latham Island, as of now, is the best area in the whole of Tanzania to find a large size Dogtooth Tuna; several World records and All Africa records have been set in its water.
