The Captain Greetings from Cape Cod! My name is Jeff Smith and I have been fishing the waters of Cape Cod for the last 13 years with most of my fishing situated on the Outer Cape. My favorite method of fishing our ocean waters is with the flyrod but if conditions do not allow I will pick up a light spinner. Both methods are extremely effective stripers, blues and the mighty bluefin tuna! I feel very fortunate to do what I do and look forward to showing you
The Boat I have owned many boats over the years and have finally found one that I feel is the best compromise between skiff and offshore battlewagon. It is a 24’ Speedcraft deep V center console with a bracketed 300 HP Suzuki 4 stroke outboard which is new for the 2008 season.
The boat is completely open with the exception of an aluminum arch built over the console to house the radar, GPS, VHF and AM/FM antennas and outrigger holders.
The Fishing
FLATS FISHING. Cape Cod offers the finest flats fishing on the northeast coast. The cape has two major areas for flats fishing. Cape Cod Bay and Monomoy. You will find me mainly guiding on the Cape Cod Bay Flats. These are world class flats that do not get the same amount of pressure Monomoy does. A good day on the flats will have you seeing hundreds of striped bass in less than 3’ of water. Striped bass from a few pounds to over 30lbs regularly show on certain stages on the tide.
Open water and Rip Fishing. When we are not looking for stripers in skinny water we are usually plying the waters off Provincetown or Chatham for open water stripers and blues. These fish generally move in big schools eating sandeels and other forms of prey. They can be found on top to down deep. We have caught them on floating to fast sink lines. Light tackle spinning rods are very effective for these fish and you can expect explosive hits from these fish on poppers and lead head plastics.
BLUEFIN TUNA. Fly Fishing for bluefin Tuna is probably the most exciting fishing we do. It will bring you to your knees with excitement and frustration but once you’ve hooked up you will never be the same! Spinning tackle is another great way to take these fish and we keep several heavy duty spin outfits on board. For the fly angler, 12-15wt rods are the norm with an intermediate and sinking line. Anglers should be able to cast 60-70’ comfortably and should be physically ready for the fig
Striped Bass inhabit our waters from mid May thru October. The fish that arrive here first are school fish in the three to five pound range with catches of twenty fish per four hour trip not uncommon. Bluefin tuna arrive in our waters in mid June and are easily accessible to the small boat angler. Juvenile Tuna 30-75lbs hang out off Chatham, Cape Cod Bay and Nauset Inlet. Bluefish roam the entire East Coast from Florida to the Gulf of Maine. During the summer months they take up residence.
