Salmon and Halibut Fishing in Ucluelet Halibut and Salmon fishing trips in Ucluelet are some of the best you can find anywhere in the world. We catch more salmon than you would get at almost any fishing resorts in British Columbia or Alaska and fish with much larger boats. Ucluelet is also known for its great weather. Combine this with Salmon Eye Fishing Charters experienced guides (all of our guides have 12+ years experience) and you will have a fishing trip to remember!
Salmon Eye Charters Sam Vandervalk, the owner of Salmon Eye Charters, has now guided for 12 years. He grew up around mid-Vancouver Island. You could say that fishing is in the family, as his older brother Ray also guides for Salmon Eye Charters. Sam and Ray had established themselves as premier guides working one of the nicest fishing resorts on the North Coast of British Columbia. This experience helped them create a first class trip where you get the best!
Salmon Fishing Boats Our boats include two 27-ft Appollo’s (pictured right), one 29-ft Trophy (below) and one 25 ft Searay. The Apollo’s are equipped with 250hp 4-stroke Suzukis. The Trophy is powered by twin 250 4-stroke Suzukis. All boats have 9.9 4-stroke Yamaha Kickers as well, except for the Trophy which is powered by twin 2 4-stroke Suzukis. Suzukis fourstrokes have been rated #1 for the last two years. These boats are very roomy and made to handle weather.
The Fishing
There are five main banks that hold salmon and bait. The Lighthouse bank(covering about 6 miles squared), Inside South bank(covering about 3 miles squared), Outside South Bank(covering about 4 miles squared), South west Corner(about 3 miles squared), the Wreck area(about 4 miles squared), La Perouse Bank which is divided up into areas we call the Shallows(about 3 miles squared), the Rats Nose, The Gullys (about 3 miles squared), the Stinky Hole(about 2 miles squared) and the Canary Hole.
Salmon generally feed on Herring, Pilchards, Squid and Krill in these areas. The main types of salmon that go through these areas are Chinook (King) salmon, Coho (Silver) salmon, and Sockeye salmon. We generally don’t fish sockeye salmon in Ucluelet as these types of salmon bite better in the Port Alberni inlet. We do catch some though while fishing for Chinook once in a while. The only thing that really hinders us from going out and catching our limit of salmon and halibut is the weather. <
Salmon fishing has taken new meaning to many who have fished with us as our salmon fishing trips are usually filled with screeming action. I should include here that halibut fishing is also very good here–you can often set down and get your halibut right away. Halibut fishing is not as much fun as salmon fishing though, so I will focus my story on salmon fishing. The Ucluelet fishing area covers a large amount of ocean, so you aren’t stuck fishing salmon in one or two spots.
<br&
The prime time to fish here is all summer - well not quite, but since we fish three areas there is usually somewhere to catch salmon and halibut. Most recommended times are: December to May for the feeder Chinooks and some halibut starting to show in Ucluelet around mid May .May - July for Halibut in Ucluelet and large numbers of Chinook(King) salmon.(they run all summer). July 15 - September 10 in Ucluelet for large Kings July, August and September for Coho in Ucluelet has been very hot for 2yr
