Light Tackle Fishing - Mosquito Lagoon - Banana River
Fishing with Capt. John Kumiski of Spotted Tail Fishing Charters for Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, and other species. Guided fly fishing or light tackle fishing charters on the Indian River, Mosquito Lagoon, or Banana River for redfish, seatrout, snook, or tarpon and more; or for tarpon fishing along the beaches of Sanibel and Cayo Costa during the spring.

Indian River, Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon
Catch redfish, seatrout, tarpon, snook, black drum, crevalle, and more in the Indian River, Banana River, and Mosquito Lagoons, an hour’s drive east of Orlando and Disney World. I specialize in sight fishing with fly and light tackle and have over twenty years experience guiding on these waters. The lagoon system here averages three feet deep. Most of the time we’ll be on either the Mosquito Lagoon or Indian River Lagoon.

  Fishing Inshore
My motor skiff, called Spotted Tail, is a 2008 Mitzi 17, powered by a Yamaha 60 outboard. The skiff runs shallow, is practically silent, and could hardly be better designed for the fishing I do. It will accommodate a maximum of three anglers in addition to me. In the Indian River Lagoon system I launch at various boat ramps, depending on where fishing has been best lately. Generally we’ll fish the Mosquito Lagoon or the Indian River Lagoon

  Fishing Near Shore
I’ll run Spotted Tail out of Port Canaveral and Ponce Inlet. The sea conditions must be nearly perfect for me to do this. Target species include tripletail, cobia, tarpon, snook, redfish, Spanish and king mackerel, jack crevalle, blacktip sharks, and little tunny. Other species may be encountered. I still prefer to sight fish while doing this, but of course that’s not always possible. I also fish structure, any flotsam we can find, weed lines,

The Fishing
Fishing from Hand Powered Boats. Standard practice is to fish from the skiff. If you want to deviate from the ’norm,’ I offer fishing trips by canoe and kayak into the no motor area of the Banana River Lagoon and into the north end of the Mosquito Lagoon. Fishing from a hand powered boat offers an aesthetic that a motor skiff cannot match. Fishing the no motor zone is a long physical day. It’s a big piece of water. The reward (if it’s good) is that there are lots of big r

Fishing Report 2/2/09 again, we didn’t do a lot of fishing last week. The weather has not been conducive to flats fishing, nor is it supposed to be for most this week. Tuesday I went to the St. Johns River, hoping for a shad or two. The wind was honkin’ along and it was supposed to rain. I waded out to the bar just upstream of the SR 46 bridge and fished for a couple of hours. I could see fish breaking but in spite of changing flies every ten minutes I did not get a bite.

I got up at first light and put the kayak in the water. After paddling a while in the quiet (Sunday morning, too!) I found a school of redfish. Like clockwork, three motor skiffs showed up. Using a crab pattern I got three fish, then left them to the skiff guys. In the meantime two more skiffs showed up, so they certainly had me surrounded! I didn’t get another shot, and didn’t get back to River Breeze until 2 PM. The water is still very low, and many of my favorite kayak fishing areas up th

Fishing for Tarpon- West Coast. During the months of May and June large schools of large tarpon run along the beaches all along Florida’s west coast. I set up shop in Fort Myers then, guiding fly and light tackle anglers for tarpon in Pine Island Sound and along the Gulf beaches from Sanibel Island to Boca Grande. These fish average from 80 to 120 pounds, although smaller and larger ones are encountered. Fly tackle includes 12-weight rods with intermediate, sink-tip, and floating lines
