Thursday, August 19, 2010Cod and shark on a shared charter. And I was able to keep everyone happy! That makes me feel good. We had good groundfishing....while fishing some of the deeper water, we got good pollack to the boat and we landed a few nice blue sharks...We were using the new Okuma Makaira 50's...with customers new to shark fishing, I love blue sharks..

The first battle is often clumsy...Meg proved that with a few tight maneuvers at the back of the boat, but she settled in nicely for a battle with a 300+ pound fish in crystal blue water. So amazing seeing the beauty in such water. Nice release at the hook (we use circle hooks which almost always hook the shark in the corner of the mouth).

To make fishing a bit easier for groundfish, we went shallower for one 2-hour drift. WE HIT COD THE WHOLE TIME!!! We had times with 5 or 6 double-header keepers in a row!!!!! Insane. Plus, the sharks found us as well and we boated another handful of nice sharks. One broke the mainline as the drag got set way, way out of whack...Note: always test your drags after every fish....When I bumped the drag up to strike to set the hook, we had about 50 pounds of drag! I was expecting 17 or so...

See you out there on the water; I'm taking reservations for September and October now....the tuna will be back I'm confident. There's soo much bait in the area now... The best spot we found today for cod I am calling OKUMA, as pro-staffer Joel St. Germain and his son, Cameron, were among the customers today. Happy to help with numbers, Capt.
