Galapagos Marlin Report - July
July 13, 2010 onboard the Patricia angler Kirk Rensno and his buddy Peter Chapes fished North of Baltra searching for blue marlin. Water temperatures were 72.5 on average. They ran about 50 miles near Genovesa island before lines went in the water. The ocean was a 5 foot chop and with some 10 to 15 knots winds. The air is considerable cooler this time of the year. The morning started out a little slow fishing up to the West drop of the island. A big eye of about 30 lbs was caught making for good sashimi. Then around 11:45 the first billfish appeared out of the water on a rapid teaser bite and was gone as soon as it appeared.

Captain Yury Gutierrez was not sure of it was a stripey or a blue. Stripeys are not abundant in this area but are no strangers either. As blue marlin fishing would have it patience was the requirement again. Nothing happened until around 1:40 pm when a huge hole busted the left flat teaser. Kirk got his bait ready and dropped it back to a hungry Blue estimated around 450lb. The fish swallowed the ballyhoo and Kirk set the hook. Next all hell broke loose as the blue greyhounded for the horizon. The fish eventually settled in and Kirk was able to release the blue after about a 36 minute fight on 50# standup. As lines went in the water Cap. Gutierrez spotted a school of bonita and trolled next to them. Another hungry and aggressive blue crashed a purple Moldcraft teaser.
This time Peter dropped hi ballyhoo back and the blue ate it on command. This fish was estimated around 500# plus. With some world class angling and skillfull maneuvering the fish was boatside in about 25 minutes for a quick release. Now getting close to running home time the lines went in the water one more time. What happened next will live in Peter’s mind forever. The crew was positioning the teaser and making baits handy. Peter was about to put a bait in a flat clip in order to have a swimming bait in the water when a tuna hit his bait out of the deep blue and yanked his rod into the water. Before all the !%&$##*@!!! words could come out of his mouth the teasers were covered with tunas (estimated around 60#). Kirk dropped a bait and quickly hooked a tuna. As mate Yury Jr. was bringing in the last teaser a large blue estimated at over 700# chased the teaser to the transom to leave the baffled anglers in disbelief. Caught off guard the only thing anyone could do was smile and more
#@$&%!!! words!! It was time to head back to Baltra. Surely and unforgettable day of fishing!
July 14, 2010 the Big Fish went out for an afternoon of wahoo fishing on the east side of San Cristobal. Cap. Fernando Yepez reported catching 9 wahoo on trolled plugs in about 120 feet of water. The ocean was choppy and water temp near the island was 70.6.
