I've been reading lots about 'tuna circles' and 'circle hooks' in mags lately. I presume that are the same thing. Are fishermen targeting smaller species such as snapper and trevally also using them now? I like the concept that they prevent gut-hooking and are much kinder to fish in general. Any suggestions would be welcome.

They are all circle hooks, it was just that they were first used for tuna. Weve been using 6/0 tuna circles on 60-80lb traces to catch yellowfin tuna for more than 20 years now and while there's been lots of tuna, we're continually blown away by how many mako and blue sharks we get to the boat using these rigs. Apart from the hook up rate being second to none using circles, there seems to be a lot less abrasion on the leader and we've never had a gut hooked tuna or shark, we've even picked up the odd striped marlin using this method.
Yes you can get circle hooks now for virtually any species you desire to target but it does take a much more patient approach to setting the hook, actually you should take as little part in it as possible, the hook is designed to set itself, with a little help from the fish of course.
