The Fishing
The tropical Fijian waters fish well all year round and we have caught our entire target species in every month of the year, however there are better months to catch more of your favorites or larger fish if you prefer. On Golden Eagle the choice is yours. Giant Trevally are prolific all year round with the best months being Feb/March and June/July. GT’s are caught popper fishing with minimum 80lb braid and big poppers. Our GT’s seem to be resident fish and are catch and release only!
Sailfish can be caught anywhere in Fijian waters at any time of the year and are occasionally caught when trolling the deep water for other species. During the cooler months May to October they gather along the edges of the reefs and are often encountered in packs. Sailfish are suckers for a skipping garfish but if you really want to have some fun Golden Eagle specialize in bait&switch.
Yellowfin Tuna are found in schools year round and a tuna aggregation occurs anytime from December to February which is when most of the big yellowfin are caught. The main food source for yellowfin is flying fish and it is truly spectacular to see the birds grabbing the flying fish as they take to the air trying to escape the hungry yellowfin. During the summer months yellowfin from 40 to 80 kg are often encountered feeding on schools of skipjack tuna and are caught on lures or skipping gars
Blue marlin are another year round proposition with the bigger fish caught during the tuna aggregation from December to February. In January this year we had a massive blue marlin eat a 20 kg mahi mahi beside the boat and went on to catch 2 from 3 hookups that afternoon. We usually fish blue marlin on lures or skip baits and if you are game to try swithchbaiting the bite 20 ft of the transom will stay with you forever.
