Is ’Sport-Fishing’ legal in the Galapagos? According to the Galapagos National Park: ’NO’ (check their websites). But ’Artisanal Vivencial Fishing’, for which Galeodan is licensed by the Galapagos National Park, IS LEGAL and allows visitors to fish for sport. Confused yet? You ought to be. But there is some rationale to this double-speak. Development of Sport-Fishing within the Marine Reserve has always been in the GNP’s strategic management plan.
After all, the more local fishermen move from commercial to Artisanal Vivencial Fishing, the less fish will be taken from the Reserve. But if ’Sport-Fishing’ was simply legalized, the market would be quickly flooded by well financed offshore operators. Galapagos fishermen would be marginalized and Sport fishing would end up like the rest of the Galapagos tourist industry: dominated by major offshore interests with negligible benefit to the local population.

Now the Galapagos National Park has issued licences to a select few to practice ’Artisanal Vivencial Fishing’ for which only the resident fishermen of Galapagos qualify, including the principal of Galeodan. Now you can enjoy legal big-game fishing at the confluence of 5 Pacific Ocean currents where nutrient upswellings draw bait and predators in abundance
