The main Billfish season (Sailfish and Marlin) runs from October to mid to late March, however Sailfish and Balck Marlin often come inshore in numbers in July and August (These months have been fantastic for Black MArlin on many Occasions.) If you want to target Blue Marlin or Striped Marlin you are better off coming between January and the middle of March.
THE 2008–2009 game fishing season in Kenya was one of the best ever, particularly along the northern sector of the coast. Black marlin appeared around the Watamu Banks in July, and with the weather not too rough and good supplies of frigate mackerel for bait, live baiting was the most productive method. There were some very big wahoo, also falling for live bait, and the usual range of giant trevally, kingfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and of course sailfish, which are present Watamu all year.
Saltwater game fishing has developed in Kenya over the past 40 years in to a world-class fishery. It is one of the few destinations where no less than six species of billfish may be caught. Terms like “Grand Slam”, “Super Slam”, and “Fantasy Slam” have become synonymous with Kenya fishing in recent years. The 2008-09 fishing season produced some of the most incredible fishing ever witnessed. Catches of 20-30 sailfish released by a single boat were not uncommon.
